AstraZeneca is one of the World's leading pharmaceutical and agrochemical organisations. The company is research and technology intensive with extensive international development and marketing skills.
AstraZeneca has large teams of fragmented technical staff working on varied research programs, often dispersed over a number of global locations, some teams working on similar programs of research.
Inevitably, AstraZeneca's research data was stored in a number of disparate and internationally distributed information systems. AstraZeneca needed to improve collaboration between their research teams by ensuring that relevant information and data was available to them and, due to the sensitive nature of the content of many of the documents, data security should not be compromised – this was of paramount importance.
A number of workshops were carried out in order to understand the problems and the potential requirements for a system. As a result of the workshops, the development of an information storage and retrieval system (effectively a Document/Knowledge Management System) specifically designed to enable and promote effective collaboration was proposed.
